"Saltfire Theatre’s Wind in the Willows understands something essential about both children’s stories and live theatre: imagination is often far more interesting than realism. Give an audience a blue sheet and tell them it’s a river, and they’ll see a river. Give them some beautifully handmade transportation, a few pop-up books, some buzzing Bees, and a wonderfully overconfident Toad, and before long they’re traveling through the Wild Wood alongside Mole and Rat. And regardless of whether the setting is Finnriver Farm and Cidery or Littlefield Green at Fort Worden, the production’s greatest scenic resource remains exactly the same: the audience’s imagination." -- Greg Heilman

"The design elements of “The Wind in the Willows” deserve special note. Libby Wennstrom’s costumes, which were humanlike attire but suggested the nature of the different animals, work very well. Though young children would not recognize it, the show is British to its core, with the costumes suggesting the innocence and confidence of England’s Edwardian era. The props by Celia Warden and her crew are imaginative and simple — often made from cardboard. This keeps the emphasis on the fun of make-believe rather than realism. Ward Serrill’s sound design was essential to the play’s storytelling. Like old radio shows, sound effects suggested the opening and closing of doors, the crashing of cars and other staging needs. The music and sound effects enhanced the peaceful feeling of life on the river." --Lauren McConnell
